Leave types, sickness and TOIL
Which leave draws down the allowance, how sickness is recorded, and how time off in lieu works.
Not all leave is the same. miaHQ separates the kinds that use up someone's holiday allowance from the kinds that don't.
The standard leave types
Your company starts with Annual Leave, Sick Leave, Unpaid Leave and Compassionate. Only annual leave (and anything you set up like it) draws down the yearly allowance — sick and unpaid leave are recorded but don't reduce holiday.
Recording sickness
Sickness can be logged as approved Sick Leave. Because it doesn't touch the allowance, recording a sick day keeps an accurate attendance record without eating into anyone's holiday.
TOIL (time off in lieu)
TOIL is a separate bank from annual leave, for paying back extra hours with time rather than money.
- Managers grant TOIL to a team member from that person's page (Team → the person), as a number of days with a note. (A negative number adjusts it back down.)
- Team members spend TOIL by requesting leave against the TOIL type — which draws from the TOIL bank, not their holiday allowance.
- TOIL only appears once you start using it, so companies that don't need it never see it.
Team members can see their TOIL balance on their Time off page alongside their holiday balance.
